- VDOS ProQueue Bootstrap Installation Instructions
-
- The purpose of this file is to list the required folders
- <that you must create>, and the files that are contained in this
- archive. I'll tell you where to place each of them. I know that
- this is a bit more complex than most people like, but you'll be
- pleased once completed I'm sure. Well, let's get started... It's
- going to take most people about 20 minutes to install for the 1st
- time.
-
- I recommend that you install VDOS ProQueue (VDPQ) on the C:\
- partition of your hard disk. I have included files to make it
- easiest for that partition. Once you have installed and become
- acquainted with VDPQ you might choose to alter the configuration.
-
- STEP 1
-
- It is assumed that you have an \AUTO folder already in
- existence for your autoloading programs. If not create one on
- your boot disk whether it be on floppy or hard disk.
-
-
- STEP 2
-
- CREATE THESE FOLDERS ON YOUR HARD DISK
-
- C:\VDOSPRO
-
- C:\VDOSLOW
-
-
- STEP 3
-
- INSIDE OF THE VDOSPRO FOLDER CREATE SUB-FOLDERS (SUBDIRECTORIES)
-
- C:\VDOSPRO\MERGE
-
- C:\VDOSPRO\DOCS
-
- ** NOTE: What this means is that you must create two folders
- within the VDOSPRO folder, one named MERGE and one named DOCS. **
-
-
- STEP 4
-
- Now you are ready to set up VDPQ. Let's copy the files
- contained in the PROQUEUE.ARC into their respective directories.
-
- IN THE \AUTO FOLDER ON YOUR BOOT DISK COPY IN THESE:
-
- DISKFREE.PRG, FOLDR060.PRG, STARTGEM.PRG, VDISK.PR, VPROLOAD.PR
-
- |
-
- IN THE ROOT DIRECTORY OF YOUR BOOT DISK, (C:\) COPY THIS:
-
- STARTGEM.INF
-
- |
-
- IN THE C:\VDOSLOW FOLDER COPY IN THESE:
-
- VDOSLOW.PRG, VPROEXEC
-
- |
-
- IN THE C:\VDOSPRO FOLDER COPY IN THESE:
-
- ECHO.TTP, LINECNT.PRG, MONOVERT.PRG, SEARCH.PRG, SYSMAP.PRG,
- TEXTWIND.PRG, VDOSCAL.PRG, VDOSPRO.HLP, VDOSPRO.PRG, VPROEXEC
-
- |
-
- IN THE C:\VDOSPRO\MERGE FOLDER COPY IN THIS:
-
- MERGE.TTP
-
- |
-
- IN THE C:\VDOSPRO\DOCS FOLDER PLACE THESE IN IT:
-
- ALL *.DOC FILES AND THIS README.1ST FILE
-
-
- For a trial run, just enter the C:\VDOSPRO directory and
- double click on VDOSPRO.PRG. You are now ready to reap the
- benefits of HARD DISK NIRVANA. Define program slots by pressing
- the shift key and clicking on an open, (or previously defined)
- slot. To assign a program to one of the 90 ARCHIVE slots, just
- click on the ARCHIVE label at the bottom of your screen. This
- will enable the bottoms-up menu. You assign in the exact way as
- you do for the menu object on the desktop. To clear a slot, just
- press the control key and click on the chosen slot. You can fill
- the mini-menu on the desktop, and the archives (which must be
- clicked on to open) in this manner. You have 100 such slots to
- utilize. The silent 101st slot is for your own editor. Just copy
- any wordprocessor, or editor into the C:\VDOSPRO folder and rename
- it EDIT.PRG. It is now available from the drop down menu, or by
- pressing its key combo. If you do copy your editor into, the
- VDOSPRO folder after you have run VDOS PROQUEUE for the 1st time,
- you'll have to delete the UTILITY.CFG file so that the program can
- re-build the file it uses to enable the utility options. Once
- done, the next time you run the program it will automatically
- appear in the menu, and be available for use.
-
- There is a bare-bones HELP feature that really is meant to be
- used with the bound manual. It will give you the key combos to
- press and a page that the description is found on. You call it
- into action by pressing the <HELP> key.
-
- RAM Installation
-
- For those that have 1040 or Mega ST's, if you want the
- software to scream, try a Virtual to RAM installation. Just copy
- the VDISK.PRG, and VPROLOAD.PRG (in that order) to your normal
- \AUTO folder. They are in the \AUTO portion of the archive, and
- have been renamed VDISK.PR and VPROLOAD.PR.. This will create a
- RAM Disk in the Drive P slot. (DO NOT USE RAM OPTION IF YOU HAVE
- A DRIVE P already on your system). Then copy the STARTGEM.P file
- to the root directory of your boot disk and rename it
- STARTGEM.INF. It will now follow this sequence upon boot-up:
-
- A RAM Disk is created to receive the system files.
- VPROLOAD moves the files for you.
- STARTGEM autoboots VDOS ProQueue from drive P.
-
- Note: If you use the auditor, or update your VDOSPRO.INF file,
- you must copy these back to your hard disk before turning off the
- system, or the changes will be lost because they are now in RAM.
- Just use the COPY function built in the software, it works great!
- Also, the utilities that are normally in the \VDOSPRO directory
- are not copied into RAM to save space. Not a problem... Just
- fill a couple of empty program slots with EDIT, MERGE, CALENDAR, &
- Etc.. by giving the RAM based VDOS ProQueue those programs hard
- disk locations. By doing this we limit the RAM requirement for
- drive P to a little over 160K.
-
-
- USING STARTGEM.PRG
-
- I have included the ASCII file that will make VDOS ProQueue
- autoboot from drive C:. Read the document file dealing with
- STARTGEM, if you desire to set up VDOS ProQueue on any other file
- than C:.
-
-
- TOTALLY NEW FOR 3.0! !
-
- If you want to rename Archive menu titles, you can now do so
- with the menu item located in the Desk pull-down menu. It is
- pretty self explanatory, so just follow the prompts. After you
- have selected the number of the Archive name to change... DO NOT
- press return until you have entered the new name. Just press the
- number and then enter the new name. This menu function will not
- be mentioned in the user manual. Further manual updates will be
- provided in update archives.
-
-
- SUMMARY
-
- I know that this is really abbreviated, but the manual goes
- into great depth (over 1" thick). To numerous to mention are bug
- fixes, and enhancements that have been made over the past 3 years.
- Even if you have a copy of VDOS ProQueue that you purchased when
- it was a commercial offering, you'll want to invest the change in
- downloading this new improved version. If you are a reasonably
- savvy ST user, you should be able to get the system up and running
- with this description file. You can drop me EMAIL on GENIE at the
- address MCP.TECH01 if you'd like. Or better yet, order the manual
- for $18.00. Your support of this Shareware venture will assist in
- keeping support for VDOS ProQueue going. Make out a check or
- money order to me and send to the below address:
-
- John B. Holder
- c/o P.O. Box 68503
- Virginia Beach, VA 23455-9433
-
- I should be able to ship your manual to you within 5 working
- days at the outside. There's only about 200, so order now if you
- want one.
-
- SHAREWARE DISTRIBUTION NOTICE:
-
- You are encouraged to UPLOAD this file to any ST BBS, or
- National Online Service, and to give it to any business that
- routinely sells Public Domain & Shareware files. Also, please
- share it with your friends. This comes with the stipulation that
- <<ALL>> files in this ARCHIVE must be included. That will prevent
- anyone from not getting the chance to order a manual, or perhaps
- missing a key file. Thank you for your cooperation.
